“Fair is foul, and foul is fair; / hover through the fog on filthy air,” chant Macbeth’s three witches, conjuring the hurly-burly that sets the play in motion. In this reimagining, seven high-school girls dressed in Scottish tartan meet in an abandoned lot to perform Shakespeare’s tragedy. As the play’s topsy-turvy world begins to take over their own, the characters lose sight of their reality. Director Erica Schmidt, while hewing closely to the text, transforms the traditional foul-and-fair paradoxes in this mise en abyme, which sold out in Seattle before coming to New York for this limited run. —C.J.F.
