When looking at sculpture by the French artist Lionel Estève, two adjectives come to mind—“delicate” and “whimsical.” It’s not surprising. Estève builds colorful constellations that are moved by carefully crafted kinetics, nodding to the Zero movement as well as to sculptors such as Jan Schoonhoven, Walter Leblanc, and Alexander Calder. He often looks to the sky for inspiration. “It seems fabulous and incredible to me,” Estève once explained, “that the fleeting, almost abstract, uncertain fluid image the stars give us has allowed men for centuries to navigate and find their way.” In his first solo show in Japan, Estève’s drawings on fabric, as well as sculptures in stone, explore the immensity of the landscape and the meanings we impose on it. —Elena Clavarino
