Happy families are all alike; every nuclear family is nuclear in its own way. With Dad out of the picture and Mom confined to bed, the siblings Paul and Elisabeth descend into psychodrama of decidedly lethal potential. Working from Jean Cocteau’s deeply twisted novel, Philip Glass penned his own libretto and scored this “dance opera” for four voices and three grand or electric pianos. As directed by James Darrah and choreographed by Gustavo Ramierz Sansano, the piece scored a bullseye at the ONE Festival in Omaha in 2019. Rolling with the punches, the creatives are now adapting their concept for outdoor performance on a garage roof at sunset. This isn’t the first instance of drive-in opera, and who’s to say it will be the last? Maybe the vogue will even survive the crisis that brought it into existence. —M.G.
