“The right angle is the most common element in civilized culture,” the artist Larry Bell told Ocula in 2017. “My sculptural interests were affected by this element; it is everywhere all the time at once!” The right angle, of course, is the building block of the cube, a central component of Bell’s practice. He’s used this shape to investigate light, space, and surface since his beginnings in the late 1950s. From one cube to the next, and the next, there is a logical evolution, a trajectory curve. Museum director Juniper Manley says, “This is meant to be a very personal exhibition for Larry as a neighbor and a friend of the Harwood.” Consisting of five cubes, it showcases the first cube Bell completed, in 1959, as well as one finished just before the show opened last December, when Bell turned 80. —E.C.
