Lap-See Lam was born in Stockholm in 1990. At 20, she began documenting the interiors of her parents’ Chinese restaurant with a 3-D scanner. Over the years, she did the same with other Chinese restaurants around town. These architectural archives revealed visual links between the disparate spaces. Without realizing it, Lam had captured a distinct form of chinoiserie, and, beyond that, the lives of Hong Kong Chinese communities abroad. In this exhibition, the central video captures one such restaurant, the floating Sea Palace, which sailed from Shanghai to Europe in the 1990s, then moored in Gothenburg where it fell into a state of disrepair. The three-story ship is the setting for a performance by twin sisters, who encounter a series of characters from Cantonese mythology. It’s a powerful tale of displacement, immigration, and Chinese folklore. —Elena Clavarino
