Ladies First

Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike in Ladies First.

A world in which women hold power over men? That’s exactly the dynamic in Ladies First, a new satirical comedy by the director Thea Sharrock. In this alternate universe, the arrogant businessman Damien Sachs (Sacha Baron Cohen), who lives for monetary pleasures and a stream of casual flings, finds himself in a personal nightmare—a matriarchal society where women lead with the same entitlement men once enjoyed. Here, men are objectified and stripped down in clothing ads, the Pope is a woman, and “Meninists” rally for rights. Sach’s coworker Alex Fox (Rosamund Pike), formerly a timid and shy colleague, is now a cutthroat version of him. “It’s undoing a lot of the female brain programming, and reprogramming it from a male perspective,” Pike said at the film’s premiere. “When you flip it, it becomes kind of ludicrous and funny.” —Maggie Turner
