Kenjiro Okazaki: Form at Now and Later

Kenjiro Okazaki, Circles drawn complete …, 2023.

262 Itaewon-ro, Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea

“What must be understood is that Cubism detached painting from its dependence on vision and its effort to represent mere appearances,” writes Kenjiro Okazaki in “Abstract Art As Impact,” a seminal essay. “What it abandoned were familiar shapes—delineation—as well as the specific colors that seemed to characterize objects.” Born in 1955 in Tokyo, Okazaki is not just a critic but also a renowned artist whose résumé includes major contributions to 2002’s Venice Biennale as well as recent professorships at the University of Tokyo and Musashino Art University. He makes abstract art with the same intention that he writes about it. Okazaki’s lush and colorful paintings feature thick layers of acrylic paint; his sculptures often utilize soil. These joyful explorations of form and space now make their way to Seoul. —Zack Hauptman
