In 2019, Kader Attia told the Financial Times that art must “reappropriate what has been hijacked by politics.” A French artist with roots in Algeria, Attia’s jarring work often invokes both countries, and challenges old colonial values. This new video installation takes the restitution of non-western and African artifacts as its subject. Attia uses the voices and views of historians, activists, psychoanalysts, and economists to explore a question of moral and emotional complexity. —E.C.
