Jonathan Dove has proved a nimble operatic storyteller many times over. Exhibit A: Flight, based on the same true-to-life stuck-at-the-airport scenario that inspired Stephen Spielberg’s movie The Terminal. Exhibit B: adaptations of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park and Collodi’s Pinocchio. Exhibit C: a two-evening “Ring” cycle (as in Richard Wagner), scored for a mere 18 players. Set to a libretto by April De Angelis, Uprising asks the question, “Can one person make a difference?” Surely the answer must be, “It depends.” In this case, expect ringing affirmation as Lola, a teenager horrified by the climate crisis, takes up cudgels to fight for the future. Community players share the stage with full-fledged professionals. —Matthew Gurewitsch
