In his first American solo show, the Swedish painter Johannes Högbom puts animals center stage. His surrealist scenes depict a dreamlike natural world where humans are no more significant than fish or sheep or flowers. Högbom says he imagines this world through the eyes of a young girl, whom he depicts in this series. He paints what she sees: a sleeping ram the color of a thundercloud, a white bull hiding among golden apples, a black dog sleuthing in a dark garden. They have their own world, yet leave us asking questions about ours. —Clara Molot
