Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action

Jerry Springer

When The Jerry Springer Show first aired in 1991, it flopped. The failing format saw Springer, the host, engaging guests on political topics; by 1994, the syndicated series was in danger of cancellation. That year a new producer, Richard Dominick, was brought in to spice things up. The new Jerry Springer was a massive success, leading to a hugely improved viewership and a 27-season run. But the show also exemplified all the worst aspects of modern entertainment: it manufactured excitement by promising guests their 15-minutes of fame, meanwhile letting them make fools of themselves on national television. People tuned in because they hoped to see screaming matches between couples, physical fights, and embarrassing personal details. Netflix’s new documentary delves into the sordid history of the show, and interviews many of its producers. —Jack Sullivan
