In 1935, Walter Benjamin wrote an essay called “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” He believed that in the age of industrialism, the objet d’art would be devalued. The artist Jens Fänge has taken Benjamin’s premise as a point of departure. His paintings are figurative, but play with surrealist depictions of space and time. Figures float like cutouts amid incongruent surroundings. The bold paintwork and fun compositions bring multiple art historical references to mind—there is something of de Chirico in the suspended walls and archways, and myriad shapes recall the work Wassily Kandinsky. Here in Hong Kong, Fänge’s recent paintings are on view. —Elena Clavarino
