James Ensor: Self-Portraits

James Ensor, Zelfportret met bloemenhoed, 1883-1888.

Mar 21 – June 16, 2024
Vlaanderenstraat 27, 8400 Oostende, Belgium

Born in 1860, the artist James Ensor grew up in Ostend, Belgium. In 1917, he inherited and moved into his aunt and uncle’s house, located across the street from his childhood home. The house, with its hyper-decorated dark interiors is not unlike Ensor’s art. “A stylistic nomad, he not only roved among landscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, satire and caricature,” wrote Boyd Tonkin in 2016, “but often whisked them together into a tipsy burlesque of skewed and addled forms.” With its subtly colorful palette and Van Gogh-esque strokes, Ensor’s Self-Portrait with Flowered Hat is a quieter example of his work. Curated by Xavier Tricot, this exhibition displays several of Ensor’s self-portraits, offering viewers intimate access to the artist’s sense of himself. —Jeanne Malle
