Jackie Brown

2009. 2012. 2019. These were Quentin Tarantino years. Why? Because he released blockbuster, must-see, and staggeringly good movies in each, and thus was a mainstay in the zeitgeist. It’s now 2024 and Tarantino’s newest film is reportedly on its way. So it’s no surprise that Netflix has just added Jackie Brown (1997) to its library, as it presumably gears up for Tarantino fever. Based on Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch, the crime film follows flight attendant Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) as she navigates a lucrative smuggling deal. Her enemies are the authorities, but also the arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). Robbie bails Brown out of jail early in the film. But he’s temperamental and dangerous, and if Jackie wants to make away with the biggest possible bag of cash, she’s going to have to do some betraying. —Jack Sullivan
