Oge Egbuonu describes her directorial debut, the documentary (In)Visible Portraits, as “a love letter to Black women, and a reeducation to everyone else.” Her timing is eloquent. Over the last three years, Oge selected a group of Black American women, academics and artists among them, and then spent months hearing their stories, asking each to share her struggles and successes. The accounts, attentive to the falsities that exist within our present-day reality, are both heartwarming and exceptional. “What we remember,” says Dr. Ruha Benjamin, one of Oge’s subjects, “is directly tied to what we create in the future.” —E.C.
