Igor Urzelai is from the Basque country; Moreno Solinas hails from Sardinia. Together they are the hot queer performance mavericks Igor x Moreno. Their latest work, the currently touring Karrasekare, translates the men’s respective ancient cultures into carefully orchestrated anarchy, replete with stagey feeling and pagan Carnival props (horned hats, animal furs, handmade masks, dunes of fabric). Karrasekare (Carnival, in Sardinian) is at once earthy and faraway, body-friendly and baroque, cathartic and voyeuristic. In short, it doesn’t do that stereotypical southern European thing of grabbing us by the throat. Instead, the hour-long work for seven players grabs itself by the throat and leaves us to ruminate over it. —Apollinaire Scherr
