Edward Hopper was an artist of solitude. He painted urban dwellers in their homes, their haunts, and on empty streets late at night. But what was happening in his personal life? Hopper’s first years as an artist were not easy, but things changed when he met his future wife, Josephine Nivison. A formidable painter in her own right, she gave up her career in art to manage his. The pair had a difficult relationship, but stayed married and died within a year of each other. This documentary, which coincides with a Hopper retrospective at the Whitney, looks into his most famous works—including Chop Suey, Office at Night, and Automat—and explores his personal life. —Elena Clavarino
