In the 1970s, the German photographer Helmut Newton worked for many American magazines, shooting fashion photographs and nudes in New York, Las Vegas, and Miami. In the 1980s, he and his wife, June, moved to Los Angeles every winter, staying in a room at the Chateau Marmont. At the famed hotel and in the Hollywood Hills, Newton shot portraits of passersby and of acquaintances both famous and infamous. He also photographed nudes for Playboy in Los Angeles; many are in black and white, others in color, all are provocative. In this exhibition, Newton’s West Coast photographs are shown with works by his contemporaries, among them George Hoyningen-Huene, Steve Schapiro, and Alice Springs. —Elena Clavarino
