In 1971, when Pascoal clambered onto the world stage with Miles Davis’s Live-Evil, the tight-lipped Miles is said to have called him “the most impressive musician in the world.” At 83, the wild-haired Merlin of Brazilian jazz still flabbergasts, conjuring music from instruments known and unknown and, seemingly, from the very fabric of nature itself. —E.E.
