Shortly before Stephen Sondheim died, in 2021, the legendary composer finished writing the music and lyrics for Here We Are. Sondheim took inspiration from two of Luis Buñuel’s surrealist films: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, a comedy about the intelligentsia lured to fancy dinners that inevitably go awry, and The Exterminating Angel, in which a group of wealthy guests are mysteriously unable to leave a lavish dinner party. David Ives wrote the book, and Joe Mantello, who collaborated with Sondheim on Assassins (1990), directs the premiere of Sondheim’s latest, and last, musical. —Jensen Davis
