In America, we don’t see a lot of work by the Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen. Born in 1932, associated with the Dutch National Ballet and the Nederlands Dans Theater, lionized in Europe, van Manen’s more expressionistic approach to classical dance isn’t championed over here. So it’s nice to see a whole program of his ballets scheduled this spring in Philadelphia. Grosse Fuge (1971) is set to Beethoven’s late masterpiece of the same title; Variations for Two Couples (2012) uses the music of four different composers, and 5 Tangos (1977) moves to the music of the great Ástor Piazzola. The Philadelphia Ballet’s artistic director, Angel Corella, is his own man and we’re delighted to see him opening up company horizons. —Laura Jacobs
