In Hadestown, two greek myths of the Underworld—Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone—become one. Updated, the couple Orpheus and Eurydice teases out the contradictions between domesticity and art, while Hades and Persephone are an allegory for climate change. The musical is set above ground, in a jazzy locale reminiscent of New Orleans, and The Fates are a girl group. A fantasy flight through D’Aulaire, as well as a serious inquiry into modern times, Hadestown won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical —C.J.F.
