A lot happened between Alberto Giacometti’s early years in Switzerland and his later days in his Paris studio. He went from painting to Cubist sculpture to abstract busts to Surrealist sculptures. It was only in 1948, in a show at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, that the world first laid eyes on his slender, stormy figures. This exhibition in Dublin, the first on Giacometti at the National Gallery of Ireland, traces his artistic journey, highlighting his relationships with family and friends alike, including distinguished figures such as the social theorist Simone de Beauvoir, the photographer Eli Lotar, and the philosopher Isaku Yanaihara. —Elena Clavarino
