“One rarely takes the time to really see a flower,” said Georgia O’Keeffe in 1926. “I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I would see.” O’Keeffe lived and worked for another 60 years, until her death in 1986, but those words came to define her practice. Whether the subject was skulls, skylines, or flowers, it was a bold and concentrated way of seeing that won O’Keeffe the title “Mother of American Modernism.” This survey traces a narrative arc from her early abstractions to her late works. It is the first O’Keeffe retrospective in Switzerland in almost 20 years. —E.C.
