In 1969, Georg Baselitz began painting his figures upside down—a conceptual twist that brought worldwide acclaim. He meant to force viewers to slow down and focus on the surface, shape, and color of a work. That same year Baselitz painted his wife, Elke, for the first time. She too was painted upside down, beautiful and unsmiling against a matte blue background. Fifty years have gone by and Elke still features in Baselitz’s portraits. In this show, which includes five series realized between 2020 and 2021, Baselitz brings fabrics into his portraits of Elke, a first for his practice. —Elena Clavarino
