Francesco Clemente: India

Nov 8, 2019 – Jan 17, 2020
43 Clarkson Street, New York, NY 10014, United States

“I believe there is such a thing as an imagination shared by the different contemplative traditions,” said the Italian artist Francesco Clemente. “My goal is to collect images and references from these traditions and connect them with the emotions from the present-day, and common experiences.” Clemente has spent much of his life in India, and his big new paintings combine silhouettes of that continent with mystic symbols in fleshy pinks (Diana Vreeland once said, “pink is the navy blue of India”). Mysterious blues also make an appearance. —E.C.
