Fantasy Life, written and directed by Matthew Shear in his debut feature, is about a recently laid-off paralegal (Shear) who stumbles into a babysitting gig—and finds himself in an affair with his employer, a married actress (Amanda Peet). With a stacked supporting cast that includes Alessandro Nivola, Judd Hirsch, Bob Balaban, and Holland Taylor, the film feels like something Woody Allen might have made in his heyday: equal parts neurotic and romantic, and firmly rooted on the Upper West Side. —Carolina de Armas
