Emily Mullin: Get a Room

Apr 8 – May 8, 2021
327 Broome St, New York, NY 10002, United States

The American artist Emily Mullin makes three-dimensional still lifes that are painting, sculpture, and object in one. She creates wall-bound ceramic reliefs—unique vessels arranged on steel shelves shaped like small altars and whimsically painted. In this exhibition, Mullin is presenting free-standing steel pieces for the first time. The structures elevate—and celebrate—the ceramic vessels. Indeed, one thinks of the Italian architect Franco Albini. As Albini did, Mullin focuses on lightness, and on the inherent humor of the handmade. Her work is both flamboyantly raw and visually refined. —E.C.
