“I expect just about every family has a collection of photographs or films,” Queen Elizabeth says in Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen. “You always hope that future generations will find them interesting, and perhaps be surprised that you too were young once.” It is true that when most think of the 96-year-old monarch, an image of tight white curls, a petite frame, and a fabulous hat comes to mind. But this new documentary, fashioned from 400 reels worth of footage, lets us see the Queen in her youth. There she is, a girl playing with her father, King George VI, in the garden; or enjoying a picnic in Scotland with family and the man who will one day ask for her hand; or looking fondly at her new engagement ring. From dancing and laughing with her sister, Princess Margaret, to scenes of her coronation, Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen is an intimate look into the long and full life of Queen Elizabeth. —Clara Molot
