Elizabeth Peyton: Practice

Aug 15 – Nov 29, 2020
4 Jiuxianqiao Rd, Chaoyang, Beijing, China

Known for painting portraits, Elizabeth Peyton insists that these small-scale works are all about her. “It begins with me,” she told Conceptual Fine Arts in an interview this year, “that’s my interest.” She is drawn to “people who help me feel my feelings,” and thus many artists—David Bowie, Klára Liden, Jonas Kaufmann—have figured as her subjects. Because faces themselves are mediums for Peyton, she has also expressed herself through the likenesses of politicians, historical figures, and professional athletes. This exhibition—a collaboration with London’s National Portrait Gallery, where Peyton’s artworks were recently hung beside historical examples of portraiture—uses a selection from that recent show to focus on Peyton’s artistic development over time. —C.J.F.
