Édouard Louis shot to international fame with his searing coming-of-age novel, The End of Eddy, published when he was just 21. For Louis, however, the message is more important than the medium. As he said in a recent interview, his focus is on “confront[ing] people with things that they precisely don’t want to see.” In 2018, the director Thomas Ostermeier worked with Louis to adapt his second novel, History of Violence, into a play at Berlin’s Schaubühne. That production has come to New York in an unprecedented collaboration between St. Ann’s Warehouse (History of Violence is on there through December 1) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which hosts Pamela Carter’s adaption of The End of Eddy through November 21. —J.V.
