Doug Wheeler, who was pivotal in the Light and Space movement in Southern California during the 1960s and 70s, has said that as a boy he was intimidated by the immensity of the desert sky. “I was afraid gravity would fail and I would fall into it.” But he was also on intimate terms with the sky, having traveled in the air with his father, a flying doctor who treated Native Americans on reservations throughout Arizona. Today, Wheeler transforms ordinary rooms into infinite, abstract worlds. For his fourth solo show at Zwirner he creates yet another experiential space. —E.C.
