Between them, the photographers Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier have over nine million Instagram followers. Their photographs are collected by the likes of Katie Couric, Justin Timberlake, and Prince Hussain Aga Khan, and in the field of international nature photography each has won myriad awards. In 2014, the two joined forces to create SeaLegacy, an organization that draws on their expertise in visual storytelling to advocate for marine conservation. Mittermeier says their photographs are “a means for beginning a conversation.” Nicklen calls them “a rally cry.” But words are unnecessary.
