The work of the Italian artist Domenico Gnoli hovers on the fringes of both Pop and Surrealism, but doesn’t belong to either. Gnoli painted closeups of things. Indeed, he cropped his images of everyday objects with a too-closeness that propelled them into abstraction. The palette was often earthy, creating a sense of muted intimacy, resonant stillness. The feeling of cultural shift in his images has been compared to something similar in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. Tragically, Gnoli’s career was cut short when he died of cancer in 1970, at age 36. This major retrospective presents 100 works, including a number of Gnoli’s drawings. —E.C.
