Even avid fans of Meryl Streep may not be familiar with Death Becomes Her. The 1992 film isn’t exactly a “deep cut.” It also stars Bruce Willis, Isabella Rossellini, and Goldie Hawn, but it’s pretty much as weird as it gets. Streep and Hawn play frenemies who fight over the same man and drink a mysterious potion that promises them eternal youth. The musical adaptation, which premiered in Chicago earlier this year, has a whirlwind plot and over-the-top theatricality. Marco Pennette wrote the book; music and lyrics are by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey. Megan Hilty takes on the role originally played by Streep, while Jennifer Simard steps into Hawn’s character. —Jeanne Malle
