Just 20 days before Covid closed galleries and museums around the world, in March 2022, London’s National Portrait Gallery unveiled a new David Hockney exhibition. The show now returns to provide fresh insight on the celebrated artist’s singular style. Made up of portraits limited to only five subjects, including himself and his mother, Hockney’s restricted content lets his diverse array of mediums shine—whether it’s pencils, pens, photographs, or his intrepid iPad drawings. The show also includes more than 30 additional portraits created during lockdown in the artist’s Normandy studio, including his already-iconic Harry Styles portrait, on view for the first time. —Lucy Horowitz
