“I paint what I like,” David Hockney has said, “when I like, and where I like.” His multifaceted oeuvre supports that statement. Ever since Hockney’s early days in Yorkshire, he has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolor, and photography. Born in 1937, a time when homosexuality was still a penal offense, Hockney addresses themes of queerness and eros in his work but with subtlety. Now 86 and living between Normandy and the U.K., Hockney is painting landscapes, sometimes panoramically, that capture the passage of time in swift color. This retrospective presents 150 works that span his entire career. It’s his first large-scale solo show in Japan in 27 years. —Elena Clavarino
