Given the precarious status of the British Isles (what with Brexit and all) Christodoulos Panayiotou has created a fitting escape: a folded theatrical backdrop of a paradise island. Stereotypically idyllic, the island evokes ideas of solitude, fantasy, and, to some degree, fear. But Britain isn’t Panayiotou’s sole concern. With other works he references his native Cyprus, the still-conflicted nation that was once a British colony. By balancing the two—and using the island as the exhibition’s pivot point— the artist comments on identity and politics. —E.C.
