Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Ephemeral Nature

Aug 1 – Nov 30, 2022
447 E Cooper Ave, Aspen, CO 81611, United States

As a couple, Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude were larger than life. Their art was larger than life, too, or perhaps life at its largest. They wrapped city monuments in cloth. They made installations of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. Aspen was a place they visited frequently. Fifty years ago, in 1972, the couple raised an orange curtain of fabric over an area of the Colorado State Highway. In 1992, they proposed Over the River—six miles of incandescent fabric stretched above different areas of the Colorado River—but controversy scuttled the project. Never exhibited works of six important environmental projects are the subject of this show at Hexton Gallery. They come from the artists’ private collection. —Elena Clavarino
