Good things come in small packages, especially if the box is red with gold garlands along the edges. We’re talking Cartier, of course. Founded in Paris in 1847, the name exudes mastery, elegance, and wealth. A timepiece or jewel from Cartier is forever, even as it’s always a step ahead of the times. Witness the legendary Tank watch, made for the modern man of action and styled on the namesake treads of those monster machines, used for the first time in the First World War. Renouncing Belle Époque and Art Nouveau curves, the house of Cartier preferred cleaner lines, embracing the rectilinear approach that would emerge in Art Deco. Here is a whole show dedicated to the design vocabulary of Cartier and the way it has evolved through generations. —Laura Jacobs
