Like John Williams, Danny Elfman made his name with a slew of film scores. His catalogue lists Tim Burton fantasies (Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland), Gus Van Sant dramas (Good Will Hunting, Milk), and the franchises Men in Black and Fifty Shades of Grey. And don’t forget the themes of Desperate Housewives and The Simpsons! Apart from all this, he served as music director of the off-the-wall Los Angeles street performers known as The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, but maybe that’s another story. At these concerts, Elfman’s Cello Concerto, commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, receives its U.S. premiere under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. The trailblazing, camera-ready virtuoso Gautier Capuçon takes the solo part. Also on the bill: Stravinsky Symphony of Winds and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. —Matthew Gurewitsch
