Can something be retro and futuristic at the same time? Bruce McCall’s fantastical paintings have argued “yes!” since 1964, when the Canadian artist moved to New York City and started painting the urban scene the way he saw it: horses relaxing in a man-drawn carriage carrying them through Central Park; King Kong waiting for his big break against a background of skyscrapers at sunset; polar bears posing on Fifth Avenue; and a guy on a stationary bike crashing through his gym’s glass window. More than 40 of McCall’s paintings are collected for this exhibition, which ranges from his early work (including ads for the original National Lampoon) and covers for The New Yorker, to more recent paintings. —J.V.
