“I can only hope my work carries some kind of meaning that sinks into the viewers in a lasting way,” says the Brooklyn-based artist Anya Kielar. Her shadow-box sculptures draw inspiration from female archetypes, pointing up the ever-evolving expectations placed on women and their bodies. Assembled from foam-carved shapes and wrapped in custom fabric, these unearthly women appear to be floating within the frame. Kielar’s first institutional solo presentation features three newly commissioned shadow-box sculptures, her largest yet. Behold the threshold to a female cosmos. —Nyla Gilstrap
