When it comes to space, what is finite? What is infinite? And where does the human body fit in? These are some of the questions that the British sculptor Antony Gormley continues to explore. “Sculpture is no longer a medium of memorial and idealization but a context in which human being can be examined,” says Gormley. “Sculpture is no longer representational: it is an instrument of investigation and questioning.” For the installations that comprise the exhibition at the Voorlinden, Gormley has used industrial and organic materials—iron, steel, hand-beaten lead, seawater, and clay. Highlights include Passage, a 12-meter steel tunnel, and Critical Mass, which sees 60 cast-iron body forms placed throughout the museum’s extensive park. The show is big—“one of the most ambitious exhibitions” in Voorlinden’s history. —Elena Clavarino
