Another Body

A still from Another Body, 2023.

For those who aren’t familiar with the new term deepfake, it’s a scary internet phenomenon with a lot of power. An experienced hacker can lift images of a person from social media and digitally repurpose them. Frequently it is photographs of young women that are recycled—suddenly they’re engaged in sexual acts. The engineering student Taylor Klein, for instance, clicked on a link to a pornography site and found her own face staring back at her. The raunchy video had gathered hundreds of thousands of views. Klein called the police but the the local force was baffled; there are currently only five states that have laws against nonconsensual deepfake pornography. Another Body—directed by Sophie Compton and Reuben Hamlyn—chronicles the young student’s long fight for justice. —Elena Clavarino
