The German artist Anne Imhof spent most of her 20s in night clubs. An art school dropout who “couldn’t deal with the framework,” she spent the early 2000s studying Michelangelo’s drawings while working as a bouncer at a club and making music. Imhof’s rigorous yet informal training shaped her practice, which incorporates painting, installations, and music. Invited to transform the nearly 12,000-square-foot lower level of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, the artist has merged Greek mythology and nihilistic club culture to turn the space into a dark underworld titled “Youth.” In an exhibition that marks Imhof’s first solo show in Amsterdam, you’ll see a maze made of school lockers, an eerie light show, and video works. —Jensen Davis
