“Artists don’t make objects,” the superstar sculptor Anish Kapoor said in 2008. “Artists make mythologies, and it’s through the mythologies that we read the object.” Palazzo Strozzi, a Renaissance palazzo with a magnificent outdoor courtyard, is a place that holds plenty of its own mythologies. In the 15th century the rusticated stone building passed from the Strozzi family to the de Medici family—and then back to the Strozzis, after 30 years of sparring. This retrospective consists of installations from different phases of Kapoor’s career. “Amidst the rational geometries,” the curator Arturo Galansino explains, “Kapoor invites us to lose and rediscover ourselves, prompting us to question what is untrue or unreal.” Make sure not to miss the new architecturally-scaled work in the garden, which promises to shock. —Elena Clavarino
