What does a cigarette in a portrait signify? Concentration. Relaxation. Stimulation. Fire. And what about a pipe, symbol of bourgeois satisfaction, which turned up in Cubist paintings and was a Surrealist trope? In this exhibition, the image of the artist smoking is analyzed as a development of modernity. Among the many artists in the show are Édouard Manet, Edvard Munch, Alfons Mucha, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard, and Josef Sudek. —Laura Jacobs
