Alien vs. Citizen

July 17, 2020 – Feb 21, 2021
220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

The O-1 Visa is awarded to aliens who are deemed “individuals of extraordinary ability.” But what constitutes an extraordinary ability? What do we truly value as a contribution to our society? Using O-1 and other merit-based immigration guidelines as a starting point, “Alien vs. Citizen” considers the individual’s relationship to community in the United States. The exhibition presents works by 30 artists—including Christina Quarles, Kerry James Marshall, Andres Serrano, and the late Robert Rauschenberg—and is divided into three categories: Individual, Citizenship, Work. —E.C.
