Growing up between suburban New Jersey and an affluent area of Venezuela, the artist Alex Da Corte was fascinated by the gap between high and low culture. “Why is there an X that says this is good taste, or this is high taste, or this quality of scarf is going to be the best,” he remembers thinking. “I loved cheap plastic stuff. Not because it was the best, but because it made me happy.” In his sprawling installations, which include sculpture, painting, and film, and feature the familiar faces of Bart Simpson, Popeye, and various Muppets, Da Corte explores the rift by exaggerating just how low “low culture” can go. His neon world is now on view in his largest ever European solo show. —Jensen Davis
